Henri Cartier-Bresson

Why These Photos are Like Henri Cartier-Bresson's (& why they are "good" pictures)
1) These are mundane and candid snapshots of everyday scenes featuring people. They weren't staged but captured in the moment.
2) The subjects stand out prominently against the background because of the contrast in tones. In both photos, especially with the dark-hair against a white backdrop, their heads pop out a lot. Also, the pictures have many straight lines, while the human figures have curves and natural shapes, putting more attention on to them
3) Both photos show many geometric shapes, adding unity and visual appeal. The lines within the images consistently guide the viewer's focus. For example, in the second photo, the railings of the staircase and the rooftops all point towards the center, directing attention to the running child.
3) Negative space plays a big role in these photographs, with large areas of plain white, grey, or black creating shapes and making contrast. The subjects, being the only things with detailed features and varying tones, naturally draw the viewer's gaze.
